James
Forbes
James
utilizes New "Self Learning Knee, SLK", micro
computer technology. In 1989 James was walking down
a county road and was hit by a pick-up truck! Unfortunately,
James' leg required amputation above the knee. Happily,
on the day this photo was taken, he was fitted with
his first "bionic" leg and he feels safe enough
to play soft ball again!
Kimberly
Herbert
Kimberly
was one of three triplets - born on the Fourth of July!
At age five, she ran across the street to talk to her
baby sitter who was sitting on a lawn mower, and somehow,
the lawn mower shifted into gear and ran over her. After
many difficult years of surgery, skin grafts and physical
therapy, she became a below knee amputee. Kimberly is
married and is raising two beautiful children. Kimberly's
prosthesis prior to coming to MHC was heavy and unrealistic.
Kimberly says, "They are so nice here. Sometimes
they provide lunch and there is a wonderful area for
children and even better, they love children."
Kim works full time and enjoys the summer at the beach
and her pool.
Oscar
Adam Raba III
Oscar
became a below knee amputee due to a bone infection.
"I was impressed that Buddy and Mike offered to
visit with me if I had any problems", Oscar shared.
He
was fitted with a new carbon fiber prosthesis that was
very strong, tough and comfortable. He now is an avid
outdoorsman who takes hunting and fishing trips all
over the world.
Carl
A. Potter
Carol,
a retired Marine Officer Helicopter Pilot, lost his
leg below the knee as a result of action in battle.
Carl was originally fitted with a prosthesis in another
part of the country and experienced limited mobility.
Being a golf fanatic, this created a much larger mental,
physical and life adjustment. He was unable to play
one round of golf without constant rest. When Carl moved
to the Maryland area, he was referred to MHC by the
Veterans Administration. Mike and Buddy utilized the
computer technology to give him a much better fitting
and more comfortable prosthesis. He now sports a much
lighter and very mobile prosthesis and plays two rounds
of golf without experiencing fatigue.
